Recognizing Warning Signs of Online Problems

Being alert to changes in your child's behavior can help you identify potential online issues early. Watch for signs such as appearing distressed when devices are taken away, reluctance to discuss online activities, hiding screens when adults approach, or withdrawal from family and friends in favor of online interaction.

Sleep disruptions might indicate excessive screen use, particularly before bedtime. Establish a rule to turn off devices at least two hours before sleep and keep them out of bedrooms.

If your child receives messages or requests from strangers, teach them to immediately block the sender and tell you. Save evidence of concerning interactions, including usernames and the content of messages, in case reporting becomes necessary.

If you suspect your child has encountered inappropriate content or communication, approach the situation calmly. Listen without judgment and avoid immediate punishment, which might prevent future disclosure. Report serious concerns about cyberbullying or online exploitation to the appropriate authorities, and remember that support services are available to help families navigate these challenges.
