The digital world offers incredible opportunities but also presents unique risks for children. As parents, you play a vital role in creating a safe online environment.

Establish Clear Guidelines

  • • Set time limits for device usage
  • • Create family rules about which apps and websites are appropriate
  • • Keep devices in common areas of your home, not in bedrooms
  • • Use parental controls and privacy settings on all devices

Open Communication

  • • Talk regularly about online experiences
  • • Encourage your child to tell you if they encounter anything confusing or uncomfortable
  • • Discuss the permanence of online content and the importance of privacy
  • • Explain that people online may not be who they claim to be

Warning Signs to Watch For

  • • Unusual secretiveness about online activities
  • • Receiving unexpected gifts or money
  • • Sudden withdrawal from family and friends
  • • Switching screens or closing devices when adults approach
  • • Unexplained changes in mood after using devices

Remember that digital safety is an ongoing conversation that evolves as your child grows. By staying involved in your child's online life, you help them develop the skills to navigate the digital world safely and responsibly.
