Creating Healthy Digital Habits

Developing healthy digital habits early will benefit your child throughout their life. Start by modeling good behavior yourself—children learn by watching you. Set aside at least 15 minutes of device-free time with your child daily and maintain screen-free zones during mealtimes.

For young children, limit screen time according to expert recommendations: no screen time for children under 2, no more than 60 minutes daily for ages 2-5, and no more than 120 minutes for ages 5-8. Ensure children take regular breaks from screens.

Create a family digital contract that outlines expectations for everyone. Discuss what's appropriate to share online, acceptable content, and time limits. Review these agreements as your child develops and their digital world expands.

Remember that balance is key—encourage a mix of activities including physical play, reading, and social interaction alongside screen time. By establishing boundaries and open communication about technology use, you'll help your child develop a healthy relationship with digital devices.
