Understanding Childhood Anxiety: Signs and Support Strategies

Anxiety is a normal part of child development, but can become problematic when excessive. As the Department of Health guidelines explain, anxiety in children can manifest as physical symptoms (stomach aches, headaches), difficulty sleeping, reluctance to attend school, irritability or clingy behavior.

Young children may experience separation anxiety (ages 3-4), while older children develop awareness of danger (ages 9-10) and performance anxiety related to exams. These are typical developmental phases, but when symptoms become severe enough to impede your child's daily functioning, professional support may be needed.

Create a supportive environment by validating feelings rather than dismissing them. Establish consistent routines that provide security and predictability. Teach simple relaxation techniques such as deep breathing when feeling overwhelmed.

Early detection and intervention significantly improve outcomes. If you notice persistent anxiety affecting your child's activities or enjoyment, consult with your pediatrician who can screen for anxiety disorders and provide appropriate referrals if needed.
