The Parent's Role in Building Mental Resilience

The Department of Health guidelines emphasize that mental wellbeing is multifactorial and multilayered—not just the absence of disorders but the product of harmonious interactions between the child, family, school, and social environment. As a parent, you play a crucial role in developing this resilience.

Risk assessment is an important part of supporting your child's mental health. Be mindful of potential risk factors including the child's temperament, physical health challenges, family dynamics, and environmental stressors. Protective factors include typical developmental milestones, supportive family relationships, and a safe community.

Model healthy emotional expression by naming your own feelings and demonstrating constructive coping strategies. Create an atmosphere where mistakes are viewed as learning opportunities rather than failures. Encourage problem-solving skills through guiding questions rather than immediate solutions.

Early detection of mental health concerns allows for timely intervention. Primary care providers can offer basic support, psychoeducation about conditions, and guidance on lifestyle adjustments that promote wellbeing before referring to specialists when needed.
