Open communication is your most powerful tool for keeping children safe online. Start conversations early and maintain them as your child grows. Use age-appropriate language to explain potential online dangers without causing fear.
Teach children four key principles: be kind online (showing respect to others), be safe online (protecting personal information), be alert online (recognizing suspicious behavior), and make good choices (seeking permission before downloading new apps or visiting new sites).
Create an atmosphere where your child feels comfortable reporting concerning interactions. Respond calmly and supportively if they share something troubling—reacting with anger or punishment might discourage future disclosure.
Role-play scenarios where someone asks for personal information like their name, school, or address. Practice saying "NO" and immediately informing a trusted adult. Remind children that anything shared online can potentially be seen by anyone and might remain online forever—this helps them think carefully before posting.
Regular check-ins about your child's online experiences show you're interested in their digital life and reinforce that they can always come to you with concerns.
