Understanding Parental Controls

Parental controls are powerful tools that help create safe digital boundaries for your child. Most devices, apps, and games offer settings that let you manage screen time, restrict inappropriate content, control chat features, and prevent unauthorized purchases.

Take time to explore these settings on all devices your child uses. Explain to your child why these controls are in place—not as punishment, but as protection. Regularly check that settings remain active and adjust them as your child matures.

Consider using child-friendly search engines like Kiddle, KidRex, or Wacky Safe, which filter results to be age-appropriate. Create bookmarks of approved websites for easy access.

Remember that while controls are helpful at home, they might not be in place elsewhere. Prepare your child by discussing what to do if they encounter inappropriate content: immediately close the device and tell a trusted adult. This combination of technical safeguards and ongoing communication creates the strongest protection for your child online.
