Talking to Your Child About Personal Safety

Having age-appropriate conversations about personal safety helps empower children without causing fear. These conversations are vital in building your child's confidence to speak up when something doesn't feel right.

Starting the Conversation

  • • Use everyday moments rather than formal "talks"
  • • Use proper names for body parts to remove confusion
  • • Explain that certain body parts are private  Teach the difference between "good touches" (hugs with permission) and "bad touches" (that hurt or make them uncomfortable)

Key Messages to Reinforce

  • • Their body belongs to them
  • • It's okay to say "no" to unwanted touch, even from family or friends
  • • They should tell you about any touch that makes them uncomfortable
  • • They will never be in trouble for telling you about confusing or uncomfortable situations
  • • Some secrets should never be kept, especially those that make them feel bad

Practice Scenarios

Role-play different situations to build confidence in responding to uncomfortable situations. Keep these conversations ongoing and adjust the content as your child grows.
