As defined in the Department of Health guidelines, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a pervasive neurodevelopmental condition that manifests early in life, leading to challenges in social communication, social interaction, and restricted or repetitive patterns of behavior.
Signs of autism may include problems with social initiation and response, difficulties with non-verbal communication, atypical sensory behaviors (sensitivity to lights, sounds, textures), impaired play skills, and repetitive movements or speech patterns. Some children display typical development until 18-24 months before showing symptoms.
Early detection and intervention are crucial. Screening tools like the Modified Checklist for Autism in Toddlers (M-CHAT) can help identify concerns. If you notice developmental differences, consult your pediatrician, who can refer you to specialists for comprehensive assessment.
Treatment for ASD is primarily educational, including Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA), special education, speech therapy, and occupational therapy. Creating structured environments with visual schedules and clear expectations provides security for your child. Remember to celebrate your child's special interests and talents as windows into their perspective.

The Abu Dhabi Early Childhood Authority (ECA) is a government entity, based in Abu Dhabi, that supports holistic early childhood development. We do this by developing policies and laws, informing decision-making through research and transforming behavior.
