Recognizing Warning Signs of Suicidal Thoughts in Youth

According to Department of Health guidelines, depression in children and adolescents can sometimes be accompanied by suicidal thoughts or self-harm behaviors. Warning signs may include expressions of hopelessness, statements about wanting to disappear, giving away possessions, withdrawal, increased risk-taking, or direct mentions of death wishes.

Children at higher risk include those who:

  • • Are being bullied or bully others
  • • Struggle with low self-esteem
  • • Have difficulty maintaining relationships
  • • Are experiencing academic challenges
  • • Have faced rejection or traumatic experiences

If you notice these warning signs, stay calm but take them seriously. The DOH guidelines emphasize that when a child expresses death wishes or threatens suicide, these should never be dismissed as manipulative behavior. Create a safe space for conversation without judgment and ask direct questions about their thoughts and feelings.

Remove access to potentially dangerous items and consult with a healthcare professional immediately. For safety, develop a plan identifying trusted adults the child can reach out to during distress.
