The DOH guidelines emphasize that when a child expresses death wishes or threatens suicide, these should never be dismissed as manipulative behavior. Create a safe space for conversation without judgment and ask direct questions about their thoughts and feelings.
Remove access to potentially dangerous items and consult with a healthcare professional immediately. For safety, develop a plan identifying trusted adults the child can reach out to during distress.
