Being alert to the signs of potential abuse is a critical part of protecting children. While some signs may have other causes, recurring patterns or multiple signs warrant attention.

Physical Signs to Watch For

  • • Unexplained injuries such as burns, bruises, or broken bones
  • • Injuries that don't match the explanation given
  • • Frequent injuries described as "accidents"  Complaints of pain without obvious injury

Behavioral Warning Signs

  • • Sudden changes in behavior or school performance
  • • Fear of certain places or people
  • • Reluctance to change clothes (may be hiding injuries)
  • • Withdrawn, aggressive, or clingy behavior  Return to earlier behaviors (bedwetting, thumb-sucking)
  • • Inappropriate sexual knowledge or behavior

How to Respond

  • • Stay calm and listen carefully if your child discloses abuse
  • • Reassure them that they did the right thing by telling you
  • • Explain that what happened isn't their fault  Report your concerns immediately—you don't need to have proof

Remember that early intervention is crucial for a child's wellbeing. If you notice concerning signs or if your child tells you about an uncomfortable experience, take it seriously.
