Creating a Safety Net: Protecting Your Child in Every Environment

Children need protection in all environments they navigate daily. As parents, you are their first line of defense. Here are practical ways to keep your child safe:

At Home

  • • Store medications, cleaning products, and sharp objects out of reach
  • • Teach children about "private body parts" and appropriate/inappropriate touching
  • • Establish an atmosphere where children feel comfortable sharing concerns
  • • Know who your children interact with in person, online and monitor their activities

At School

  • • Teach your child to tell a trusted adult if something makes them uncomfortable
  • • Maintain open communication with teachers about your child's wellbeing
  • • Remind children not to leave school premises with anyone without your permission
  • • Role-play scenarios to help them respond to uncomfortable situations

In Public

  • • Establish a meeting point if separated in crowded places
  • • Teach your child to memorize your phone number
  • • Instruct them never to go anywhere with strangers
  • • For younger children, consider ID bracelets with your contact information

Remember, protecting children is everyone's responsibility. Teaching children about personal safety empowers them without causing fear. The most important protection is open communication—let your child know they can always talk to you.
